Elder Exchange: Neighbors with National and International Missions
February 8 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
Join us for this month’s academic assembly deliberating over issues of Christian faith and life. Sue Nelson, Executive Director of Gift & Thrift Store, and Wesley Sensenig, Director of Christian Light Publications, will share dialogue on the topic “Neighbors with National & International Missions.”
Gift & Thrift Supports MCC Mission
Gift & Thrift supports the relief and development work of Mennonite Central Committee, partners with local nonprofit agencies serving at-risk local populations, and works to divert donated goods from the landfill. The presentation will describe volunteer opportunities within the organization, recycling efforts, local fundraisers, partnering with the Arts Council of the Valley on First Fridays, and other ways community persons can participate!
Sue Nelson is the director of Harrisonburg Gift & Thrift. Sue has worked in management for over 30 years (5+ years with Gift & Thrift, Domino’s Pizza, Borders Books & Music, plus working at Sentara RMH). She loves that her work with Gift & Thrift allows her to be a part of something bigger that supports global and local efforts to aid people in need.
Impact of Christian Education Around the World
Come hear about Sanford Shank’s vision to offer a quality curriculum to Christian schools and the way this work has spread to many groups and countries. From the jungles of Papua New Guinea to city mission schools in Malaysia and homeschoolers in Romania, the vision has grown well beyond its humble beginnings and is lifting up God’s name in many places.
Wes grew up on a pig farm but has spent most of his adult life with troubled youth in therapeutic camping programs in PA and Ireland. He loves to see Christian communities in many places taking responsibility for their children’s educational and spiritual development. Wes and his wife Karen have 3 children and care for a foster child.
In this dialogue format, two speakers will share how their organizations are involved in local, national and international missions. Following these presentations, an open group dialogue will help discern how these activities resonate with vibrant Christian faith.
