A Special Evening of Illumination
The Annual Celebration of Lights wasn’t just an event—it was a beautiful gathering of community and remembrance. The Walking Roots Band graced the evening with the comforting sounds of the holiday season, performing cherished selections from their 2017 Christmas album, Hark!
Adding to the magic, their children shared season-affirming scripture readings, weaving a deeper meaning into the night’s festivities. The warmth of music, family and togetherness filled the air, reminding everyone of the season's true spirit. What a beautiful way to celebrate and connect!
Harmonies of the Heart: A Memorable Intergenerational Christmas Concert
The 10th Annual Intergenerational Choir Christmas Concert was a heartwarming celebration of music and community. Thirty VMRC residents joined seven talented JMU student conductors to present a beautiful evening featuring “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear,” scripture readings and beloved carols. An audience of 205 was captivated by the emotional depth and dynamic performances throughout the night. This year’s concert held special meaning as it was dedicated in loving memory to Dave Reser, adding a tender and reflective note to the enchanting event.
Christ is Born! Cline Christmas Service
The spirit of Christmas filled Woodland Park during our Cline Christmas Service, where residents and staff joined together to celebrate the birth of Christ. Scripture readings, led by a group of residents and staff, told the Christmas story, accompanied by carols sung with guitar by Nurse Joan Strassner. Beautiful music enriched the service with piano duets by Dorothy Kreider and Supportive Living Chaplain Carmen Miller, and festive songs performed by Dan Bowman. Nelson Waybill’s original poem added a sincere touch. It was a special gathering that left many feeling blessed and deeply connected.
Mosaic Handbell Ensemble Concert
Residents and community members gathered for a delightful evening of music performed by the Mosaic Handbell Ensemble. The concert featured original handbell and chime arrangements, with a special opportunity for audience participation in creating a simple song using hand chimes. The shared experience of music brought warmth and cheer to everyone who attended, making it a memorable celebration of the season.
VMRC Resident Pen Pals Stuff Holiday Stockings for Skyline Middle School Students
Santa’s elves were in full swing in our community, packing stockings for 21 pen pal students from Skyline Middle School. This valued partnership unites our Independent Living residents with students from the Bridging English program, who are new to the U.S. and represent 11 different countries. Over the school year, these connections blossom into friendships, while giving students meaningful practice with their English literacy skills. What a joyful way to celebrate the holiday season and the spirit of giving!
Holly Jolly Gala 2024!
The Holly Jolly Gala brought festive cheer to Detwiler Auditorium, where Independent Living residents enjoyed an evening of joy and celebration. With a backdrop of stunning mountain views, the event featured delicious appetizers, a glowing ambiance and lively music by DJ Jon James. As the music played, the dance floor came alive with energy, making this event a highlight of the holiday season for all who attended.
A Joyful Celebration: Christmas Worship Service Brings Community Together
Residents and staff from across campus came together for a heartfelt Christmas Worship Service, celebrating the birth of Jesus. The service featured the reading of Scriptures by Recruiting Manager Chuck Corley, Arts and Education Program Manager Lolly Miller, and residents Lewis Overholt and Aldeen Wenger, along with the singing of beloved carols. Wellness & Enrichment Administrative Assistant Heather Snow gave an inspiring solo performance of “O Holy Night” that moved everyone in attendance. This meaningful service brought our community together in a spirit of unity and joy, celebrating the season’s message of love, hope and reverence.
