How Volunteering Can Change Lives

When you volunteer at VMRC, you’re more than just providing company and support for our residents; you’re helping to create meaningful life in our community. At VMRC volunteers are able to create real connections with our residents thanks to the authentic and intentional rhythm of daily life at our campus. This is evident in Pam’s story, which began with the simple intention of giving her spare time to help someone else, which blossomed into the beautiful narrative of connection and companionship.

After her mother passed away in 2020, Pam felt like she needed to pursue an opportunity to volunteer and give to others. In this pursuit to make a difference in someone else’s life, she describes being drawn to VMRC for our one-on-one experience with residents, and that’s when she met Margie. "It was just almost unreal when we first met," Pam recalls with a smile. "It was like we had known each other forever. We just became instant friends." Margie quickly became more than just a resident to Pam. She became a confidante, a source of laughter, and a cherished friend. Their bond has evolved into a genuine friendship built on quality time, understanding and plenty of laughter and fun.

For Pam, volunteering at VMRC has become a cornerstone of her life—a source of joy, fulfillment, and purpose she didn’t anticipate. "I get excited when I know it's my time to come here. This is so much a part of my week now, and it is such an important part of my week that I can't imagine letting that not happen anymore." Her experience at VMRC has far exceeded her initial expectations, proving that sometimes, the greatest gifts come in the most unexpected opportunities. Through her experience, she has discovered the true beauty of volunteerism—a beauty that lies not only in the act of giving but also in the connections forged along the way.

Pam’s story and the friendship she shares with Margie is a treasured testament to the volunteer and residential culture we aim to foster here at VMRC. When you walk down the halls you can hear the echoes of laughter and the exchange of stories between our staff, volunteers, and residents. When life leaves us feeling down and disconnected, VMRC aims to be a community for hope—a place where every interaction is an opportunity to make a difference, and where the power of human connection grows.
